Concept of International Relations

Abstract

As the world becomes more interconnected, the study of International Relations also becomes more important ever than before. So through studying of international relations, we can better understand the global world and can develop workable strategies for the maintained of international peace and security as well as international advancement.

In current scenario the study of international relations is called global politics or world politics. While international relations also considered an interdisciplinary field consist of study of economic, social, and cultural interactions as well. This article focused primarily on state-to-state relationship as well provide a comprehensive view of other actors such as intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), multinational corporations (MNCs) etc.

Hans G. Morgenthau as a father of IR

International Relations is an important field of Political science. This field of study dominated by the insightful dedications of Hans G. Morgenthau. That’s why he was called the father of international relations. He was the founding the theory of political realism and power politics.

Actually Hans J. Morgenthau was a thinker in  the field of international relations. He emphasized  that countries built relationship according to their self-interest and restrain power. That’s why nations compete with each other and sometimes go to war and anarchy. His work has influenced many sovereign states to formulate its policies for their survival in global world.
Introduction

According to Aristotle, man is a social animal. So Being a social animal, man can’t live without other human beings. Moreover, for his daily needs he has to depend upon his fellows for survival. In the same way state cannot live in isolation. So states are bound to formulate a pattern of interactions with other states. These relations are the key factors of International Politics.

International relations mean the study of the interactions between the sovereign states at the global level. Actually it is the study about that how states behave with each other for their survival and development. International Relations also deals the relationship of states across the boundaries.

This field of study is necessary for better understanding the complex chain of relationships of different states that shape our world. Actually through the study of these interactions, we can judge the behavior of states, analysis the global events, and sought out the mechanisms for achieving peace and stability across the world.

In short It is a multidisciplinary field in which students can use a variety of methods such as statistics, comparative and historical analysis to evaluate the relations among nations.

International Relations is an increasingly relevant field of study

In this global era International Relations is becoming increasingly day by day due to the interconnected approach through trade and commerce and through social media. A globalized world focused on the professionals trained to tackle the various complexities and find solutions to meet the challenges of the future. So in this context International Relations provides a comprehensive platform for well suited to employment in a changing world.

Historical Development

  • History of IR begin with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.
  •  Realism and internationalism became popular in American system of international affairs.

  • IR began to take shape in the early 20th century in the west.

The roots of international relations can be traced back to Greek civilization in the form of diplomacy. In the past the city states were also engaged in many treaties and alliances. In fact, the evolution of International Relations has a very vast history. Thucydides and Aristotle were the ancient philosophers wrote about the nature of war and peace. The modern discipline of IR emerged during the post-World War II.

The devastation of World War I highlighted the need for a systematic approach to understanding the issues of international politics which is necessary for the  establishment of IR as an academic discipline.

The League of Nations was established to maintain peace and cooperation in the world. But despite its failure to prevent World War II, the USA laid the foundations of the United Nations in 1945. During this interwar period many theories such as realism and liberalism emerged and shape the study and importance of international relations across the globe. We can say that The League of Nations and the United Nations laid the foundations of peace and security as well as international cooperation.

Importance of International Relations 

International relations play a crucial role in shaping the world politics in this global era.IR directly impact on global peace, security, technology, trade, and cooperation. In this interconnected world we cannot deny the importance of international relations.

Here are some key reasons why international relations are important:

1.Cooperation among Nations.

It is the International relations who create cooperation among the sovereign nations by communication and agreements. These relationships encourage countries to work together on issues of common interest like trade, security, technology and peace. So through IR countries can avoid conflicts and peace and prosperity can be achieved.

2.Shaping global politics.

International relations help to shape global politics by guiding how countries interact with each other? make decisions as well as in resolve various conflicts. So as a result we may be able to promotes peace, trade, and cooperation worldwide. It also helps nations work together and to find the solution of global problems.

3.Protection of Human Rights.

International relations play a crucial role in protecting human rights. Actually some rich and developed nations provide aid and to under developing countries and assist them to improve their educational, social, economic and healthcare structure. In this context some International organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also contribute a lot.

Furthermore, international relations also help to promote and protect human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a safeguard of human rights.  Amnesty is an international organization also work to ensure these rights globally.

 4.Political Alliances.

Through International Relations political alliances of different states can enhance their influence on the world wide. These alliances can provide support and assistance in any crisis. NATO is a good example of such type of alliance where member countries agree to defend each other in case of any attack. Political alliances also help the member countries to show their unity in international forums.

 5.Science and Technological advancement.

International relations facilitate the international community the exchange of scientific knowledge and technological advancements. For this purpose, collaborative research projects and international conferences help the scientists and researchers to share their findings in various fields. This cooperation can lead the world towards the progress in the field of medicine, environmental science, science etc.

6.International Peace and Security.

One of the basic purpose of international relations is to maintain global peace and security. For this purpose, countries use different methods such as diplomacy, negotiations, and treaties to prevent war and resolve the disputes. At international scenario there ae some organizations like the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), work to maintain peace and prosperity among the nations.

7.Addressing Global Issues.

At international level there are some problems which require international cooperation and attention. That why International relations provide a platform to sovereign states to work together on these issues.   The Paris Agreement is an example of international efforts to combat climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

8.Trade and Economic Cooperation.

International relations open the way for interstate trade and economic development between different countries. So countries make trade agreements and partnerships. Moreover, countries can exchange goods, services, and technologies and boost their economy. World Trade Organization (WTO) also help the international community to promote international trade.

  • (WTO)World Trade Organization is for trade opening comprised 164 members.

Conclusion

After the careful examine the concept of International Relations, we may assume that international relations have a broad range of topics such as foreign policy, diplomacy, war and peace, national security, national interest, globalization, as well as international law. Actually, it is a multi-dimensional field of study that focus the interactions between states, and non-state actors on the global level. The theoretical perspectives of IR and its approaches help to resolve the disputes and shape the world we live in.
